Mononucleosis – kissing disease
Mononucleosis, also known as Mono or kissing disease is caused by Barr virus (EBV) after two to three weeks of infection. The virus belongs to the herpes virus family, and it is transferred from person to person through the saliva which makes kissing a common means of contracting the disease. It is characterized by fever, malaise, weakness and obvious sore throat.
Causes of Mononucleosis
Microscopic pathogens in the form of viruses through RNA or DNA invade cells of organisms, and they multiply. This virus takes control of the cell altering the cell’s genetic code and fully takes control of the cell’s function. This infected cell can be multiplied by a larger proportion, infecting other cells in the body. The body immune system is capable of killing the virus at some point or develops immunity to it.
Symptoms of Mononucleosis
A sore throat that lasts for as long as one to four weeks requires the querying of Mononucleosis.
Mononucleosis has flu-like symptoms such as a sore throat, fever and swollen lymph nodes which can also show in the form of extreme fatigue and can be wrongly diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome. Mono can cause inflammation of liver occasionally, and this can lead to jaundice, hepatitis, and inflamed spleen.
Rare symptoms include low blood count, inflammation of lungs, skin rash, and low platelet count. Swelling of the lymph nodes around the neck requires urgent medical attention because of the difficulty it brings to swallowing and breathing.
Tests for Mononucleosis
A blood test is usually done to determine if the white cell count is normal or moderately elevated. When an increase of more than 10% is noticed in the white blood cell known lymphocytes, then there is a positive Mono spot. Mono spot test investigates Epstein-Barr virus to determine the presence Mononucleosis.
The test shows infection after 2 to 9weeks of getting infected because the virus remains dormant. The symptoms can last for a space of 4 weeks or more.
